Yoga as a Therapy for Back Pain
In 2011 I completed my training for using yoga as a therapy for managing back pain. These are specialised one to ones where I address specific back pain problems from undiagnosed back pain, unspecific lower back pain to those who have had a broken back, prolapsed disc, sciatic pain etc. Yoga is currently being used more and more as a therapy for back pain. Please do take a look at these articles from and from to find out more.
You will need to attend a minimum of five sessions for the Yoga Therapy to work. The first session is mainly fact finding and the remaining four will contain specific yoga exercises to deal with your back pain. Most of my clients do continue beyond the five sessions but it is really up to you and how comfortable you feel with your yoga practice.
The one to ones will last for an hour and a half and will cost anywhere between £35 to £45, some guidance follows:
• £35 - for people who are unwaged or on a very low income;
• £36-£38 – for people who are on the lower end of the pay scale;
• £38-£40 – for people who are in the middle of the pay scale;
• £40-£45 – for people who are high earners.
We trust your integrity when it comes to payment.
Some Testimonials:
“The sessions have progressed from a relatively gentle explanation of what my body was capable of, to a pushing (but still gentle) of its limits. The sessions have concentrated on general flexibility and building up core stability and also strengthening the back muscles. I am aware of a gradual improvement in flexibility, core strength and in my back. Lower back pain has decreased significantly and I find sitting for longer periods much easier. These sessions have made me much more aware of my body. As well as the improvement in my back, I feel that I have more energy generally both physically and mentally.” 2011. C.L. has been suffering from back pain due to a broken back in the T12/L1 area.
“I’ve been having trouble with my lower back for years and also have sciatica which is horrible and makes driving any distance almost impossible. I’d signed up for Jo’s Back Pain Workshop, but when the day came I really didn’t want to go as I was in so much pain – but I’m so glad I did!” 2009.
“The workshop lasted for three hours; we began with some gentle stretching and Dru yoga exercises which eased my back considerably. After the refreshment break Jo gave us a very useful and informative talk with the aid of a skeleton and excellent hand-outs on how back problems arise. We finished with gentle and very easy back strengthening exercises and relaxation.” 2009.
“The whole workshop was very well planned and I’m so grateful to Jo for doing it. I bought the CD of back exercises that Jo used and have been practising the exercises most days. I am now pain free, able to sit through concerts and the cinema and can drive without being in dreadful pain after just a few miles. I realise that I’ll have to continue with the exercises for some time but they only take about 15 minutes. I’d recommend Jo’s workshop to any one with back problems”. Janis, 2009, Local Artist
