Yoga Attitude has been developed for teenagers from the ages of 11 to 18 years. The classes are interactive, fun, dynamic and are differentiated for all the differing needs of the group. I have been yoga-ing with teenagers since 2006 in a variety of secondary schools, youth schemes and have also run bespoke teenage evening classes.
In a secondary school setting I have taught yoga as part of P.E. which was very successful as it engaged the teens who were not interested in doing traditional P.E. I have also taught yoga as part of Citizenship, History, learning to cope with exam pressure and for raising cultural awareness. I was also given the opportunity to work with a wide variety of teens who had Special Educational Needs and were not engaging in everyday school life.
Recently there has been a lot of press about the benefits of yoga for children. Please email me if you would like further info about this research. Briefly however, yoga appears to:
• Improve emotional and social skills;
• Increase ability to identify body parts and their location;
• Improve co-ordination and balance;
• Improve concentration and calmness;
• Increase flexibility and
• Improve general health.
How can yoga help Teens in School?
Exam pressure: Practicing yoga can teach relaxation techniques and build confidence. In a Yoga Attitude class specific breathing techniques are taught which can then be used to overcome stress and help increase concentration.
Negative thoughts: In a Yoga Attitude class teens are taught not to compete, but to focus on themselves in a very kind and gentle manner. As we progress through the yoga postures, sequences, breathing, relaxation and meditation techniques their self-esteem and confidence grows.
Tension and tightness in the body: Research shows that the more stressed we become and the more our internal dialogue is unsupportive, the more this is reflected in our physical body with tension and tightness. Although a Yoga Attitude class is different from other forms of exercise, it really works the body by building strength and flexibility, massaging the internal organs and thereby getting rid of toxins, tension and tightness.
