Virtual Satsang: A Little History of the Energy Body

Virtual Satsang with Dr. Benjamin Major and Joanna Bertzeletos of Yoga Nature Sheffield 💖

The primary focus of most modern yoga is on the physical, anatomical and bio-medical body, but it wasn’t always this way. Prior to the modern period, there was a much greater focus on what we might call the energy body, a complex network of energetic nodes including cakras (wheels), granthis (knots), ādhāras (supports) and others, all linked by nāḍīs (channels or conduits) along which move various winds or vital forces (prāṇa-vāyus). Then there is of course kuṇḍalinī (meaning literally ‘she who is coiled’), signifying the power of the divine feminine (śakti) residing within the yogic body and which can be stimulated by means of yoga practices in order to actualise spiritual potential.

The yogic body is a vast subject and there is considerable variation through time and across traditions. This satang provides an introduction to this long and fascinating history.
